The Book of Haggai is the thirty-seventh book of the Bible and one of the Minor Prophets.
Set during the time after Israel’s return from Babylonian exile, it records God’s call through the prophet Haggai to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.
The people had returned to the land—but they were focused on their own homes while God’s house remained in ruins.
Haggai’s message is short but powerful: Put God first, and He will take care of the rest.
A Call to Rebuild the Temple (Haggai 1)
The people had started rebuilding the temple years earlier, but they stopped due to opposition and discouragement.
God sends Haggai to remind them of their priorities.
Key Highlights:
- “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” (Haggai 1:4)
- God says, “Give careful thought to your ways…” (v. 5, 7)
- The people listen, fear the Lord, and begin rebuilding.
Lesson: When we put our plans ahead of God’s purposes, we miss His blessings—but it’s never too late to return.
Encouragement for the Builders (Haggai 2:1–9)
As the people resume the work, many feel discouraged because the new temple seems unimpressive compared to Solomon’s. God speaks words of encouragement and hope.

- “Be strong… and work. For I am with you.” (Haggai 2:4)
- God promises, “The glory of this present house will be greater than the former…” (v. 9)
- A foreshadowing of the coming Messiah, who would bring true peace to God’s house.
Lesson: Obedience may feel small or unseen, but God’s presence gives it eternal significance.
God’s Blessing Is Restored (Haggai 2:10–19)
Haggai uses a lesson from the Law to explain that the people’s former disobedience had made everything they did “unclean.” But now that they’re obeying, God will bless them again.

- Before obedience, their efforts bore little fruit.
- “From this day on I will bless you.” (Haggai 2:19)
Lesson: Obedience unlocks God’s favour—and His blessing flows when we walk in His will.
A Promise to Zerubbabel (Haggai 2:20–23)
The final message is directed to Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah and a descendant of David. God promises to shake the nations and make Zerubbabel like His signet ring—a symbol of royal authority.

- “I will overturn royal thrones…” (v. 22)
- God reaffirms His covenant with David’s line through Zerubbabel—ultimately pointing to Jesus Christ.
Lesson: God’s promises remain firm—even through small beginnings, He is building His kingdom.

- God Keeps His Promises: His plan is unfolding—through people, through obedience, and ultimately through Christ.
Final Thoughts
The Book of Haggai is a reminder that even when we feel tired or discouraged, God is with us.
He calls us to put Him first, to obey with confidence, and to trust that He is building something greater—even when it begins with small steps.
